FIBA rule update: Players must pay agents directly

According to a new FIBA rule, effective from December 5, 2024, clubs are now exempt from paying agent fee.

FIBA has sent a letter to licensed agents to inform them of an important regulatory change affecting them.

As of December 5, 2024, the possibility for clubs to pay players’ agents directly or indirectly is removed, including through agreements allowing third parties to make payments on behalf of clients. 

Following a ‘grace period’, from February 1, 2025, players must now handle agent payments directly through contracts, ensuring no clauses allow clubs to pay agents on their behalf.

This new rule ensures transparency and strengthens the player-agent relationship by eliminating potential conflicts of interest. (FIBA Information)

During the 31st FCH General Assembly, celebrated in Oslo on the fringes of the IHF World Championship, the clubs dealt with the IHF Regulations for Transfers between Federations, Article 9, § 2: … A player may only conclude a contract with another club if the player’s contract with his/her existing club has twelve months or less remaining. …

The Clubs discussed the regulation and regard it to be neither legal, nor realistic. Accordingly FCH will approach EHF/IHF to delete this regulation.
